The use of Makaton
At Castle Hill School we recognise the importance of the teaching of our school Community Languages, as it forms part of our policy of ‘Total Communication’ in which we communicate in the child’s own language. For some pupils at Castle Hill this includes Makaton.
For pupils who are specifically developing their use of Makaton they are included in weekly Makaton groups. Makaton is also used in classes to support the schools’ core vocabulary and the key words from the term’s topic.
In addition to teaching the core signs, Castle Hill School also recognises the benefits of participating in regular sign and sing opportunities. Primary Sign and Sing is held on a Tuesday afternoon and the whole school Sign and Sing is held on Friday afternoons. The pupils benefit from the opportunity to interact with each other, further develop their communication skills and celebrate their progress.
